Chosen by the Paw – Why I Didn’t Choose Dogs—They Chose Me

    Cats or Dogs?
    — by a devoted Pawrent and accidental dog chef

If you’d asked me this a few years ago, I might’ve given you a diplomatic shrug. I liked animals, sure. But I wasn’t the kind of person who gushed at the sight of a wagging tail or purred back at a kitten. I was independent, busy, borderline allergic to fur, and deeply committed to my urban routine.

    And then… came Sauli.

A lanky rescue pup with expressive eyes and an uncanny talent for manifesting exactly what she wants (including me). One look at her photo on the adoption app and something shifted. It wasn’t logical. It wasn’t planned. It was just love—raw, quiet, and instantly transforming.

So if you’re still wondering Cats or Dogs?, I’ll say this:
    Dogs are my gurus.
Cats may be mystical and independent (and trust me, I admire that), but dogs? Dogs are heart. Dogs are presence. Dogs are the soft thud of companionship when the world feels too loud. They teach us how to be—without judgment, without agenda.

Since Sauli came into my life, everything’s changed. I’ve moved houses, cities, and careers—with her leading the way. I wrote my first book, Pawrenting Guide for the New Pawrent, after realizing just how many new dog parents were searching, like me, for a blueprint filled with emotion, not just instruction. Then came Cooking for Your Pup, born out of necessity (and a very picky eater). And next? A veggie cookbook for pawrents and pups who believe mealtime is sacred—whether on two legs or four.

These books aren’t just about recipes or routines. They’re stories. Love letters. Testimonies of a life I never saw coming but now can’t imagine living without.

    So dogs or cats?
I choose the ones who choose you back, every single time—with muddy paws, mischief in their eyes, and an entire universe of love curled up at your feet.

(But if you’re still on the fence, read one of my books. You’ll see what I mean.) 🐾

  • Patience and Trust: Lessons from Sauli the Belgian Malinois

In an age defined by fleeting digital interactions, a story of genuine connection and transformative experience resonates with particular power. “Sauli’s Journey” is not simply a chronicle of pet adoption; it is a deeply human narrative woven around the arrival of a remarkable Belgian Malinois into a new life. It is a tale that beckons readers to contemplate the unexpected pathways of companionship, the transformative power of patience, and the profound bonds that can emerge from the most unlikely circumstances.

The narrative begins with the arresting simplicity of “The First Sight.” In the vast digital expanse, amidst a sea of images, one portrait stood apart. It was Sauli’s likeness, a captivating blend of canine grace and untamed spirit. There was an undeniable magnetism in that single frame, a quiet insistence that drew the beholder in. It was more than mere aesthetics; it was an intimation of a story waiting to unfold. The ensuing days were filled with a nervous anticipation, a delicate dance between hope and uncertainty. The act of arranging the initial encounter was not merely logistical; it was an act of faith, an opening of oneself to the unknown. It was an acknowledgment that some connections transcend the tangible and speak directly to the heart.

“The Tornado Weekend” plunges us headlong into the unpredictable reality of canine companionship. The initial meeting with Sauli was a revelation, a vivid departure from any preconceived notion. This was not a sedate creature but a force of nature, a whirlwind of energy and intelligence. The confines of a hotel room transformed into a stage for an exuberant, if slightly chaotic, ballet. Attempts at escape, rearrangements of furniture, and a palpable air of untamed vitality defined those initial hours. Yet, beneath the surface of this whirlwind, a subtle dance was taking place—a dance of communication and understanding. It was a reminder that meaningful connections are often forged not in tranquility, but in the midst of turbulence. Amidst the chaos, a pivotal moment arrived, a flicker of recognition, a shared glance that transcended language. It was a small, almost imperceptible shift, but it signaled a turning point—the moment when Sauli began to trust. This episode stands as a testament to the quiet power of perseverance, revealing that trust is not a given but a delicate blossom that unfolds with patience and consistent understanding.

The journey culminates in “The Big Journey,” an odyssey across the American landscape that mirrors the internal transformation taking place. The logistics of transporting a high-energy Belgian Malinois from Wisconsin to California were formidable, a labyrinthine puzzle that required ingenuity and adaptability. Travel mishaps, some humorous and some testing, became indelible vignettes in the narrative, punctuating the physical journey with emotional resonance. These challenges served not merely as obstacles but as shared experiences that strengthened the nascent bond. Upon arriving at a new home, Sauli’s first moments were a fascinating study in canine adaptation. A blend of curiosity, caution, and that undeniable spark of mischief characterized her initial explorations. It was a moment of transition, a moment where two lives, human and canine, began the intricate work of merging.

Underpinning these vivid anecdotes are the enduring themes that give “Sauli’s Journey” its emotional depth. “The Unexpected Reality of Adoption” dismantles the idealized notions of pet ownership, revealing the authentic, sometimes messy, beauty of forging connections beyond expectation. The narrative underscores that the path of adoption is rarely linear, and the most profound rewards often emerge from navigating the uncharted territories. “Patience & Trust” emerge not as mere virtues but as active principles that form the bedrock of any genuine relationship. The story advocates for a measured approach, a willingness to relinquish control and allow trust to blossom at its own pace.

Finally, “The Power of Unspoken Bonds” celebrates the profound truth that communication transcends words. A shared glance, a gentle touch, the intuitive understanding of unspoken cues—these are the cornerstones of a connection that resonates on a primal level. In essence, “Sauli’s Journey” is more than a story about a dog; it is a poignant exploration of what it means to connect, to trust, and to grow alongside another being. It’s a narrative that will resonate with anyone who has ever felt the transformative power of companionship, and it stands as a testament to the extraordinary bonds that can be forged when hearts, both human and canine, find their way to each other. It promises to be a compelling read, whether framed as an illustrated book or a short memoir-style narrative, offering a window into a journey that is as heartwarming as it is profound.

  • The Day I Flew Across the Globe Without My Shadow

The True Story Behind “Sauli’s Day Across the Globe

I remember the weight in my chest the night before I flew to India.

It wasn’t from the suitcases or the endless travel checklist.

    It was from Sauli.

Not being able to explain to her why I had to leave.

Not knowing how to prepare her for the days that would follow.

And truthfully—not knowing how to prepare myself.

    She wasn’t just a dog.

    She was my shadow.

    My tornado.

My anchor in all the chaos of life.

And yet, I had to place her in a crate and trust a series of strangers with her journey across the globe.

    The guilt? It was sharp.

    The anxiety? Sharper.

What if she was scared mid-flight?

What if something went wrong at 30,000 feet?

What if she thought I had abandoned her?

I sat alone on the other side of the world, tears streaming down my face, unable to sleep.

I kept wondering—how was she doing? Was she okay?

You see, Sauli had crate anxiety. She had broken out of nearly every crate we’d ever tried.

She was a Houdini in fur.

And now, she was all alone. In a crate. In the sky. Somewhere above the clouds between continents.

    But somehow…

    She made it.

My brave little girl made it.

When we finally reunited in India, she looked at me with hesitation for a split second—and then, just like that, she leapt into recognition.

That moment? I’ll never forget it.

That moment became the seed of this book.

Sauli’s Day Across the Planet isn’t just her story—it’s ours.

Told from her point of view, this picture book captures what it might feel like to be separated from the one you love… and the long, brave journey to be together again.

It’s for every child who’s ever missed someone.

For every adult who’s ever cried silently at the airport.

For every pet parent who’s had to say goodbye, even just for a little while.

    This is for you.

Coming May 4th — now available for pre-order!

Let Sauli’s story warm your heart and remind you that love travels oceans, too.
