Honestly?
It wasn’t when I got my first job, paid rent on time, or opened a retirement account.
It was the day I stood in a living room that looked like a crime scene—pillow stuffing everywhere, leash in one hand, treats in the other—whispering, “It’s okay, Sauli… we’ll figure it out.”
That was the day I realized adulthood isn’t about having control.
It’s about having grace—especially when you’re covered in dog hair and disbelief.
When I adopted Sauli, a black Belgian Malinois with eyes full of mischief and mystery, I thought I was prepared. I’d read the training manuals, bought the fancy harness, and stocked up on chew toys. What I didn’t expect was how much she’d end up training me.
Patience. Surrender. Forgiveness.
The kind that comes when you realize life doesn’t follow your plan—it chews it up, buries it in the backyard, and brings it back to you with muddy paws.
That’s when I understood what it really means to “grow up.”
Not when you have it all figured out, but when you can laugh, clean up the mess, and still show up with love.
Sauli reminded me that being grown-up isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being present.
That lesson is what inspired The Adventures of Sauli the Rescue Pup—a series about chaos, companionship, and the strange beauty of unconditional love. From her journey across continents in Sauli’s Day Across the Planet, to her first whirlwind weekend in Sauli Gets a New Home, and now the pure mayhem of Sauli and the Great Escape—every story is a love letter to resilience, humor, and the magic of rescue dogs.
So, when did I finally feel like a grown-up?
When I stopped trying to control everything…
and started following the paw prints.
