Who are your current most favorite people?
Socializing is undoubtedly one of the trickiest yet most rewarding challenges as a pet parent. Over the years, my dogs have become my greatest social filter. Their uncanny ability to “read the room” is remarkable. They sense genuine intentions. This skill has transformed not only how I meet people but also who I choose to keep in my circle.
Dogs as People-Magnets (and Filters!)
When I first brought Romo home, I underestimated how much of a social magnet he would be. Our daily walks became mini networking sessions. Strangers stopped to gush over his floppy ears. Other dog parents offered training advice. I suddenly found myself having conversations with people I might never have met otherwise.
But here’s the twist—Romo had a sense about people. He’d enthusiastically wag his tail at some and cautiously step back from others. At first, I thought it was random. Over time, I realized his instincts were spot on. The people he trusted became some of my closest friends.
Then came Sauli, my opinionated diva, who had a knack for spotting “fake nice.” Sauli would look right through the overly enthusiastic hand-shakers and gravitate toward those with calmer, authentic energy. Her discernment sharpened my own, teaching me to trust her judgment over my people-pleasing tendencies.
I remember going out on a date, which was also a play date with my dogs. Our dogs hated each other and got into a fight. That was the reddest flag for me. You can gauge a lot based on the temperament of a person’s dog.
Life Stages and Social Shifts
As my dogs grew, so did I. My social life shifted from noisy gatherings to quieter, more meaningful connections. I traded late nights out for park dates and found a community of fellow dog parents who shared my priorities. Some friendships faded. The ones that lasted understood the nuances of my life with Romo and Sauli. They knew why I couldn’t stay out late. They also knew how I couldn’t commit to spontaneous plans without factoring in their needs.
These friendships became stronger because they revolved around shared values—patience, kindness, and, of course, a love for animals. There’s something special about bonding with people who understand why you spend hours researching the best dog harness. It’s also special when they appreciate celebrating your pup’s birthday with an actual cake.
How Dogs Foster Genuine Bonds
The beauty of dogs lies in their ability to reveal our true selves. With them, there’s no pretending. They strip away the small talk, forcing us to get real with people. You might share a laugh over a dog-related mishap with someone. Or, you could have a deep conversation during a hike. The connections you make as a pet parent are often rooted in sincerity.
Celebrating the Social Joys of Pet Parenting
Romo and Sauli have introduced wonderful people into my life. For me, one of the greatest joys of having them has been these connections. A neighbor helped me when Romo escaped his harness. Another fellow dog mom introduced me to Greenies after Sauli refused every other treat. These connections have enriched my life in ways I never expected.

Glad I’m not the only person who doesn’t stay out late because of her furry friend. ❤️
