Chosen by the Paw – Why I Didn’t Choose Dogs—They Chose Me
Cats or Dogs?
— by a devoted Pawrent and accidental dog chef
If you’d asked me this a few years ago, I might’ve given you a diplomatic shrug. I liked animals, sure. But I wasn’t the kind of person who gushed at the sight of a wagging tail or purred back at a kitten. I was independent, busy, borderline allergic to fur, and deeply committed to my urban routine.
And then… came Sauli.
A lanky rescue pup with expressive eyes and an uncanny talent for manifesting exactly what she wants (including me). One look at her photo on the adoption app and something shifted. It wasn’t logical. It wasn’t planned. It was just love—raw, quiet, and instantly transforming.
So if you’re still wondering Cats or Dogs?, I’ll say this:
Dogs are my gurus.
Cats may be mystical and independent (and trust me, I admire that), but dogs? Dogs are heart. Dogs are presence. Dogs are the soft thud of companionship when the world feels too loud. They teach us how to be—without judgment, without agenda.
Since Sauli came into my life, everything’s changed. I’ve moved houses, cities, and careers—with her leading the way. I wrote my first book, Pawrenting Guide for the New Pawrent, after realizing just how many new dog parents were searching, like me, for a blueprint filled with emotion, not just instruction. Then came Cooking for Your Pup, born out of necessity (and a very picky eater). And next? A veggie cookbook for pawrents and pups who believe mealtime is sacred—whether on two legs or four.
These books aren’t just about recipes or routines. They’re stories. Love letters. Testimonies of a life I never saw coming but now can’t imagine living without.
So dogs or cats?
I choose the ones who choose you back, every single time—with muddy paws, mischief in their eyes, and an entire universe of love curled up at your feet.
(But if you’re still on the fence, read one of my books. You’ll see what I mean.) 🐾
