I would like to dedicate this post to Chauncey.
Chauncey, the adorable little dog from Mad Men — yes, Duck’s dog.
He was a victim of divorce and ended up with a family that never really cared for him. Chauncey got stuck with kids who didn’t even acknowledge his existence and a wife who had bigger concerns — juggling two children, singlehood, and taking care of her aging mother.
The decision was not so difficult. They decided to leave him with their estranged dad, Duck. Duck was busy with the song and dance of Madison Avenue — among the glamorous lives of Don Draper’s groupies, the Mad Men.
Unfortunately, poor Chauncey didn’t stand a chance.
Duck, let him go.
One chilly night in the ’60s, Chauncey found himself wandering around Madison Avenue.
Did he deserve this fate? Perhaps he did. Maybe he was better off without a family that never acknowledged him.
I like to believe that Chauncey found a wonderful new home that night. Perhaps a kind couple out in the town noticed him wandering alone.
Maybe that was the pivotal night for them. Maybe the man proposed to the woman, inspired by Chauncey’s innocent charm.
And who knows? Perhaps they lived happily ever after.
So here’s to all the Chaunceys wandering through busy streets on cold nights. I hope you are just a wagging tail away from your forever home, your forever family — those who will truly make you theirs and where you truly belong.
In memory of Chauncey from Mad Men.
